Betty Sheffield – Inmate Penpal #041713-0154
April 17, 2013 ¤ Female Inmates Age 36 - 40
I was thinking of what to write and of course the usual comes to mind… Single mother of three with the list of likes and dislikes…
However, I’ve never been a typical woman and have always marched to the beat of my own drum. Now, I am still a single mother of three beautiful children that I love very much.
They are also grown now and on their own, leading and living their own lives. Leaving me the opportunity to rediscover my life as a woman.
I keep reminding myself that it’s OK to be afraid as long as your courage outweighs your fears, and sometimes we have to let life turn us upside-down so we can learn to live right-side up.
Everything about my life before my incarceration has changed so drastically or no longer exists. So here I am, looking at a world full of question marks, trying to find where I stand in all of it.
I am enjoying my new journey in life and I have discovered that even behind these walls life is so much more vibrant and alive, when you have been through a fall from grace. Being exiled, sifted and refined can definitely change your perspective.
I no longer live in an abyss. Now I live life for its true meaning. Looking back at past mistakes is a good place to start. We have all made them, with some much more costly than others.
However, what was profound for me, was seeing that for the most part I wish I would have laughed more, loved more freely, lived more vibrantly, been more spontaneous.
I was given, rather than being so set on achieving the American Dream (house, kids, career). It’s like being like a hamster on a wheel. It seems never-ending, by motion alone, without truly living and experiencing life.
So now here I am, ready to communicate with the world on a different level, while I redefine my life and myself. Not for who I am… but of who I will become.
Now that I have opened the door for you, I hope you are intrigued enough to want to join me on this journey of discovery. I will of course be waiting to hear from you.
