Most people are curious why inmates are in prison. It’s a commonly asked question amongst men in here. Some use this time to boast about their crimes against society. I, on the other hand do not.

I am ashamed of the horrible and self-destructive choices I made in my youth. I regret the hurt and pain I caused others when I was in society. To those I have harmed, I am extremely sorry for the crimes I committed against you. Unfortunately, my apologies, while sincere, can not undo the suffering I have caused. The remorse I feel does motivate me to work daily at bettering myself for the rest of my life.

I have spent all but one year of my adult life in prison. I was arrested at age nineteen. I admitted committing my crimes, deciding to spend my time and energy in programs and activities designed to better myself and challenge my old ways of thinking.

My goal became living a victim-free life.

I have lived at Joseph Harp for over 26 years. Starting in 1991 I was an active participant in the Residential Sex Offender Treatment Program. I worked extremely hard to take full ownership of all crimes I committed throughout my childhood and teenage years, to identify with and acknowledge the hurt and pain I caused others, and to better get in touch with my feelings of empathy through a host of treatment tasks and exercises that shed insight into how my behavior truly impacts others.

I am proud that after 12 years of treatment I was allowed to successfully transition this legislatively funded program. Being given the title of “Treated Sex Offender” by clinical therapists is a very significant accomplishment for a person having committed sex offenses. My self-control, inner-personal and communication skills, and quality of life have greatly improved thanks to being provided this type of support.

I once had significant substance abuse issues. In 1998 I participated in and successfully completed all requirements of the Life-line Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program by year 2000. With help from staff and other inmates who share in my goal of finding happiness and empowerment in living an alcohol and drug-free life. I do love coffee though, it’s great before a 10 mile jog.

While in prison, I have completed over 72 College credit hours. I hope to one day earn a Bachelor Degree in business or liberal arts. The last course I took was in the fall of 2015.

I am a big supporter of life-long learning and enjoy engaging with others in educational pursuits.

I am very gifted artistically. This discovery was made in prison. I love to sing and play the piano. I enjoy drawing, painting and sculpting. I have over 26 years of needle-working skills and a strong passion for all things crocheted and knitted. I have crocheted and knitted hundreds of finished items. Some are original stuffed animal and toy patterns I designed on my own.

I am currently a leather-shop member. Only the most trusted of inmates are allowed to be shop members. My goal is to learn as much as possible about leather-crafting. My intent is to improve my skills to benefit myself and others while I am here, and to better prepare myself for greater chances of success upon release if given that opportunity.

I have a large family and what I believe to be strong family support. I find this support valuable to my health and well-being. I love my family members dearly and appreciate the love and encouragement they constantly offer.

My intent with this listing is to expand upon and build a support base of people outside of prison, who are not part of my family circle. I would like to develop healthy friendships with successful adults who have the time and willingness to correspond with me. My desire is to interact with people who are alcohol and drug-free, independent and who care about others. I request correspondence from law-abiding citizens who believe that there are redeeming qualities in inmates and are willing to give me an opportunity to develop a friendship with.

I hope to one day to meet a woman to open my heart to as well. Because of my lengthy sentence, I have not allowed myself to entertain the idea of searching for a woman to fall in love with and one day marry. I hope to not live my entire life a bachelor. Others close to me have been encouraging me to go forward and begin my search now. I am really looking forward to companionship.
