David Sosa – Inmate Penpal #122012-0841
December 20, 2012 ¤ Male Inmates Age 31 - 35, Prison Penpals Serving Life
It’s said, “Sexy Sells!” So here I am attempting to get you to pay some attention to the man shamelessly selling his assets!
I say this jokingly because I’m naturally easy going and love a good laugh. Who doesn’t? Yet, at the same time let me say this, please don’t judge my book by its cover. I’m much more than meets the eye. First impressions are like the first spoonful of a new ice-cream. Trust me, things only get better the deeper you dig in.
My name is David Sosa. I’m 34 and outside of the prison ink, muscles, and youthful appearance. I’m deeper than most people perceive. So what’s “deeper” mean to a convict? For starters, I’m college educated with 3 associates degrees. I am a lover of art and writing, believing both mimic life, regardless of the canvass we use.
Using my gift of writing and talent at drawing, while imprisoned within the belly of this whale, I discovered a positive self-expression. My pains, desires and hopes became fuel for my poetry, art and stories. A yearning to tell the world what we all long to say, “I’m only human, thus flawed, but within me is the seed of potential!”
I’m a believer in God, knowing for every mountain we face is a mountain peak to chase! I view my body as His temple, thus take care of it, even if I like decorating mine! And my tattoos are my testimony of the life I am enduring.
To me, life is a lot like getting ink. We’re all entitled to some bad tats! But after years of seeing others “graced” with good work. Hey! Don’t keep disgracing yourself!
I’ve learned that laughter and smiles are the best medicine for a long face and hurting heart, so I make it a point to make people do both.
A Russian, an American and a blonde are debating who’s the greatest. The Russian declares, “well, we were the first to space”. Not to be outdone, the American says, “we were the first to the moon.” Crossing her arms, the blond states. “well, we will be the first to make it to the sun!” The men both look at her crazy before one says, “you can’t go to the sun. its too hot.” Turning her nose up, the blond says, “I know! That’s why we’re going at night!!” (smiling)…
I never claimed at being funny, but hopefully I got you to smile, and if not. I really need to step my joke game up huh?
Now, being as much a realist as I am an optimist, even if you do like ice-cream… something that taste good can still have some flaws, right? I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no angel! Hell, if I had a tail and some horns it’s only cause I stole’em from the devil.
Like I’ve said, I made my fair share of mistakes. I like to believe I’m ambitious and confident, while others believe I’m being egotistical and cocky. I love to laugh and smile, so others wonder if I’m taking life seriously. But this is who I am. Real, authentic and yeah, flawed.
I’m not out to ask anyone for money. I’m blessed with a beautiful family. I’m not out to run game. I believe what you reap is what you sow. I am only one of many men incarcerated dealing with the pain of loneliness, seeking someone with a smile and a laugh.
Prison life has taught me the value of friends and family. I like to compare them to diamonds, because with time, hardships can strengthen a lump of coal and turn it into something beautiful, timeless and valuable. And, when we all live in a world where everyone acts like a hard rock, sometimes it’s good to let time do it’s thing and stick around for something which can become priceless.
I can’t promise to be the best of conversations, but I do promise to listen. I can’t promise we’ll be the best of friends, but I do promise to be a good friend. And I can’t promise to live up to anyone’s expectations, but I do promise to be me. Real. Authentic. And yeah, flawed.
Hopefully you can see past my prison ink, and listen to the song that’s my life. Hopefully you can see past my mistakes, and understand we all make’em. “Hopefully”, you can trust me enough to sing me your own life’s lyrics while you’re creating them. The only real question left to ask is if you’re up for another spoonful of new ice-cream? (smiling)…
