The Federal Bureau of prisons consists of 114 institutions, 6 regional offices, a Central Office (headquarters), 2 staff training centers, and 28 community corrections offices. The regional offices and Central Office provide administrative oversight and support to Bureau facilities and community corrections offices. Community corrections offices oversee community corrections centers and home confinement programs.
The Bureau is responsible for the custody and care of more than 201,000 Federal offenders. Approximately 85 percent of these inmates are confined in Bureau-operated correctional facilities or federal detention centers. The remainder are confined through agreements with state and local governments or through contracts with privately-operated residential re-entry centers, detention centers, prisons, and juvenile facilities. Search State Department of Corrections Inmate Records
State Department of Corrections makes available information about inmates differently from state to state. While there is no singe national inmate locator database listing all state inmates nationwide, most state Department of Corrections do maintain a website. Not all states have a searchable inmate database online. For those state that do not have an inmate locator online, you will have to contact their Department of Corrections directly to make an inquiry about locating an inmate.
When making an inmate inquiry to a state Department of Corrections you should have the following information available : The inmate first and last name, prison identification number and the date of birth. Be advised that the policies pertaining to inmate information searches and disclosure can and does vary from state to state.
